Meet Marissa Thomas, BSHCA
Marissa Thomas, a dynamic Woman of Color and a visionary leader, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the tender age of 35. This life-altering moment led her to co-found “For the Breast of Us” in May 2019, alongside Jasmine Souers, another resilient breast cancer survivor. Their mission was clear: to craft a sanctuary where women of color battling breast cancer could find resources that speak directly to them, shared by voices they could relate to.
Diagnosis: Stage II 35% ER+ Breast Cancer
Treatment: Lumpectomy, Chemotherapy and Radiation
Location: West Coast Girl living in Atlanta, GA
Hobbies: Spending time with family and friends, & traveling
In November 2015, when Marissa faced her diagnosis, she turned to social media not just as a platform, but as a lifeline to connect with others who could mirror her struggles and triumphs. Known for her candid nature, Marissa never shied away from the harsh realities of breast cancer. Despite her private persona, the challenge of confronting the disease’s brutalities while trying to be a beacon of hope for her loved ones was daunting.
It was Cristina, a dear friend and fellow breast cancer warrior, who encouraged Marissa to share her journey openly. By doing so, Marissa not only showcased the struggle but also the profound beauty and rawness inherent in the fight against breast cancer.
With a laser focus on women of color, Marissa has dedicated herself to guiding others through their battles. Her work centers on educating women on how to navigate the complexities of the healthcare system, define their own survivorship post-diagnosis, and embrace the philosophy that life’s beauty doesn’t fade with adversity.
Marissa believes firmly in the power of living your best life, no matter what cards you’re dealt.
Marissa’s academic and professional background is as impressive as her commitment to her cause. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration and plays a pivotal role on the board of Living Beyond Breast Cancer. Moreover, her advocacy extends into her certification as a Living Beyond Breast Cancer Young Advocate, highlighting her commitment to supporting the next generation of survivors.
When she’s not championing the needs and stories of her fellow breast cancer baddies, Marissa treasures the moments spent with her son Siaire, her extended family and friends, and indulges in her love for travel. Marissa Thomas is not just the CEO of “For the Breast of Us”; she’s a beacon of hope, strength, and unwavering support for women of color everywhere, navigating the stormy seas of breast cancer with grace and resilience.
Jasmine Souers is a passionate, trained advocate for young women and people of color affected by breast cancer. Diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer at the age of 26 in 2016, Jasmine turned her pain into purpose by co-founding For the Breast of Us, the first inclusive breast cancer community for all women of color. Today, she is the President and CEO of The Missing Pink Breast Cancer Alliance, connecting change agents in the pursuit of health equity for communities of color affected by breast cancer. She lends her experiences and expertise to organizations such as Young Survival Coalition, Metastatic Breast Cancer Alliance, Living Beyond Breast Cancer, UF Health and the Mayo Clinic Breast Cancer SPORE.
Your voice, your story, and your support can make a difference. Join For the Breast of Us in our mission to empower, support, and advocate for women of color across the globe. Together, we can create a future where every woman has the resources and support she needs to overcome breast cancer.
