In her breast cancer journey, Tan not only had to face the physical challenges, but also the emotional toll of dealing with past traumas and strained relationships. Despite setbacks, she continues to give herself grace and take time for herself. Tan’s story reminds us of the power of resilience in navigating difficult times.
I was discouraged from sharing my breast cancer story, but I knew I had to be an advocate for others. My journey has taught me the importance of supporting each other and breaking down barriers for women of color facing breast cancer.
To me, being a survivor means living my best life, not taking things for granted, and being present in the moment.
There is still this lack of addressing medical history, passing general history, and education from generation to generation. We are still in the early awareness stage in some Asian communities when it comes to women’s health.
She was told there was nothing more to do and to just go home and prepare herself.
