For the Breast of Us (FTBOU) is honored to feature Aneika Bocas, a 31-year-old West Indian (Trinidadian) woman who bravely shares her story of facing breast cancer as a young mother and woman of color.
Anika’s journey highlights the unique challenges and triumphs experienced by many women of color impacted by breast cancer. At 31 years old, as a first-time mom-to-be, Aneika faced a life-changing challenge—triple-negative breast cancer. Her story sheds light on the unique struggles faced by women of color dealing with breast cancer, the importance of self-advocacy, and the strength found in community support.
Discovering the Unexpected
Aneika’s journey began at 35 weeks pregnant when she noticed a concerning lump. Despite initial reassurances that it was likely just related to her pregnancy, Aneika pushed for further examination. Her persistence led to a diagnosis of Stage 2B triple-negative breast cancer, a particularly aggressive form of the disease, at a time when she was preparing to welcome new life into the world.
Navigating Treatment Without Family Nearby
Living in Hawaii, away from her family and amidst the challenges of military life, Aneika navigated her diagnosis and treatment with limited local support. Her treatment regimen included chemotherapy, radiation, and a lumpectomy, each step bringing its own set of challenges and victories.
The Significance of Community and Being Heard
As a woman of color, Aneika’s experience underscores the crucial role of being heard and supported. “It feels important to be heard,” Aneika shared during her interview. She stressed the importance of educating others and sharing her story to empower women like her to advocate for their health.
Challenges Unique to Women of Color
Aneika’s story also highlights the disparities in healthcare experiences among women of color. From diagnosis delays to the struggle of navigating treatment protocols while balancing new motherhood, her journey is a testament to the resilience required to face such trials. We asked Aneika, “Being diagnosed with cancer is overwhelming, let alone while pregnant. Did your ethnicity play a role in your experience?” “There’s definitely something to consider”, said Aneika. “Breast cancer is less common in young West Indian women, and there wasn’t a family history in my case. That, combined with the initial dismissal of my lump, makes me wonder if cultural bias might have played a part. Education is key! Many of us, myself included, come from cultures where health issues aren’t openly discussed. Let’s break that cycle!”
Celebrating Survival and Sharing Wisdom
Now in remission, Aneika is passionate about using her voice to educate and inspire others. She advocates for regular self-exams and encourages her community to support one another. “Educate others, share your story, tell them what you want and what you need. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and push for thorough examinations. Early detection saves lives.”
Embracing the Future with Hope
As Aneika looks forward, she continues to embrace each day with hope and determination. Her journey through breast cancer has been fraught with challenges, but her spirit remains unbroken. She remains a beacon of hope and a source of strength for many in our community.
Aneika’s Message to Us All
“Share your story, educate others, and never underestimate the power of your voice.” Aneika urges. Her journey is a powerful reminder of the impact of personal stories in raising awareness and fostering a supportive community.
Aneika’s journey is a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by women of color with breast cancer and the powerful impact of community support and self-advocacy. Let’s keep the conversation going, spread awareness, and continue to support each other in every step of our journeys.
Thank you, Aneika, for your bravery and for reminding us of the power within each of us. Your story is not just one of survival but of thriving against the odds.
