Baddie 2 Baddie: Navigating Skin Care Through Your Radiation Treatment

Dealing with radiation therapy can be harsh, leaving our beautiful melanin feeling dry, itchy, and irritated. So, let’s break down how we can take care of our skin, keep that glow, and stay as comfortable as possible through this journey.

First things first: Gentle is the name of the game

Being gentle is your skin’s BFF during radiation. Ask your doctor about fragrance-free lotions or creams that are good for sensitive skin. Apply after every shower and throughout the day, especially before bed to lock in that moisture. Ingredients like aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, and calendula are great for soothing and repairing skin. Think of your skin as a thirsty plant; keep it hydrated, girl! Here are some of our favorite things to use:

– Avocado Oil

– Calendula Salve

– Radiaplex RX

– Aquaphor

I know you’re thinking, Black and Brown people don’t need sunscreen. Newsflash: yes we do!! Especially during treatment. The treated area is more sensitive to the sun, so slap on that SPF 30 or higher sunscreen whenever you’re outside. Think of it as a shield protecting your beautiful skin. You need some recommendations? Of course, we’ve got you covered:

– Supergoop,

– Eucerin 50 SPF

– Black Girl Sunscreen.

Listen to your body, boo

Do you have itching, redness, or burning sensation on your skin? Let your doctor know, stat! They can recommend soothing creams, prescribe something to help, or adjust your treatment plan if needed. Remember, your comfort is key and your voice is important- listen to your body, listen to your skin!

Stay Hydrated

We’re obviously not just talking about moisturizers. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help keep your skin (and the rest of your body) hydrated. This helps in the overall healing process and makes you feel better during treatment. Keep your water bottles in sight, so that you don’t forget to sip throughout the day!

Ditch the irritant perfume

We know you love your perfume and those scented lotions, but hold off for now. Anything with fragrance, alcohol, or harsh chemicals can irritate your skin. Think of it as a temporary sacrifice for your long-term radiance.

Let your skin breathe

Cotton is your new best friend. Ditch the tight-fitting clothes and itchy fabrics that can rub against the treated area. Loose-fitting, comfy clothes are your jam right now.

Makeup? Nah, maybe later, sis

Radiation can make your skin more sensitive, so it’s best to give makeup a break on the treated area. But hey, if you gotta wear it, stick to hypoallergenic products and be extra gentle when applying and removing.

Bonus tip

Cold compresses can be your saving grace for any itching or irritation. Wrap some ice cubes in a clean towel and gently press it against the treated area. Feels ahh-mazing, right?
